Growing in Knowledge-March 2012
Monday, 12 March 2012 20:49
The Golden Egg is "the best-tasting squash in Burpee’s taste trials for two years in a row." Find out why in the March issue of Growing in Knowledge, written by Phil Sutton, Extension Educator-ANR for Purdue Extension-St. Joseph County. The issue features some frustrating invasive plants and how to combat their spread, with a warning that Japanese Knotweed "spreads rapidly through rhizomes and seeds fragments [that] are transported by humans when they attempt to control." Instructions for controlling Garlic Mustard emphasize the dormant season, with the only redeeming action being, "If you can't beat it, eat it!"

Coyotes are Back
Monday, 06 February 2012 19:29

Coyotes have been seen and heard in increasing numbers recently in Quail Ridge. Several daytime sightings and a few noisy nighttime coyote skirmishes have attracted the attention of residents, and one homeowner recently found a dead coyote in the backyard. Homeowners are reminded to be vigilant when leaving small pets outside, especially at night when coyotes are most active.
Coyotes in Indiana are mating in January and February, with a gestation period of about 60 days, according to the Indiana Coyote Rescue Center. They typically hunt for small animals--rodents, rabbits, squirrels, moles--with availability of prey determining their population and litter size. With this mild 2011-2012 winter, the food source has been abundant. More information on coyotes in Indiana can be found at www.coyoterescue.org.
A Quail Ridge resident who was out in a hot tub late at night recorded this brief presumed outburst by coyotes, which ends with the sound of a passing car.

. Helping out the food bank doesn’t get any easier than this. All you do is leave non-perishable food on your front porch on Saturday morning and Donna and her team of neighborhood volunteers will swing by, pick it up, and take it to the Food Bank of Northern Indiana. They do their run on the third Saturday of the month. I had the kids help me go through the pantry last month, which was a great lesson in generosity for all of us.

Fir Road Realignment
Sunday, 04 March 2012 10:55
St. Joseph County announced it intends to begin realignment of Fir Road beginning as soon as April 2012. Eliminating the dual stops along Adams Road between Fir and Clover Roads, the new configuration will have Fir Road dogleg east of the Quail Ridge Villas and connect directly with Clover Road. The County announcement suggests the intersection will be a four-way stop, whereas earlier drawings indicated a roundabout.

Harris Twp. Taxes Going Down
Friday, 13 January 2012 11:50
For Quail Ridge homeowners, some taxes are actually going down, according to Harris Township Board Member Ken Lindsay (R). He reports:
"The Township Board (legislative body) and Township Trustee (executive) devised and passed a 2012 budget that pares away expenses and spends down surpluses that grew over the years. No services were lost. The plan is to operate this way for more than one year.
Township governments still provide a limited number of services including fire, cemetery and small park upkeep, and some level of assistance to the poor. Harris Township is in the northeastern corner of St. Joseph County and includes Granger, older farms, and newer subdivisions.
The taxes eliminated for 2012 are for General and Township Assistance services, which are under the direct control of the Township. On a tax bill they are part of the 'Township' line item, which also includes Fire Territory tax levies."
Lindsay has set up a Ken Lindsay, Harris Township Board page on Facebook at which he posts other township items. For additional details about Harris Township government and how to calculate your personal savings, you may also email him at
